Civic Arts became the court-appointed Conservator of the Mulberry Second Presbyterian Church property in August 2019.  The Conservatorship Act is an important tool for Pennsylvania’s older communities, providing mediation in blighted areas where property owners have abandoned their responsibilities.  Now we are able to work  toward the revitalization of the property, such that quality of life can be returned to an area with rich history, in a very diverse neighborhood, where the need is great.

The Mulberry church was once home to a variety of community services, some of which are looking forward to returning their operations to the church.   Roof problems and a declining congregation led the Presbytery to sell the property to the very non-profit, that Civic Arts recently took to court in order to reclaim the property through Conservatorship.

Today the roof must be replaced, and the interior conditions resulting from neglecting the roof will require significant attention.  Civic Arts plans to transform the building renovation challenges into job opportunities and economic redevelopment. Without acquisition costs, and balanced by the variety of practical assets the building offers, (community kitchens, gym, significant performance spaces, 24 classroom school, stages, meeting spaces), the Mulberry civic space offers new hope right on the edge of the Wilkinsburg business district.
